Netters back on the courts in California
IRVINE, Calif. – After a two week break in the schedule, the Middle Tennessee women's tennis team will be back in action for two matches in California this week.
"We challenged the girls after our last match to take these last two weeks to try and work as hard as possible, make no excuses, and get better every day," MT head coach Charlie Ramsay said. "I feel like they have done a great job in practice and really are starting to come together more and more with every session."
Outdoor play in the 2016 season will open up with a matchup with UC Irvine on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. CT. The Anteaters will enter play with a record of 1-9 on the campaign, defeating Grand Canyon in the season opener. UCLA and Arkansas defeated UC Irvine early in the season at the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
"I think outdoor tennis will suit our team nicely," Ramsay added. "Outdoor tennis will really test your fitness level and we have worked really hard at that these last two weeks and I believe our girls will be able to handle a long, tough match."
San Diego will play host to the Blue Raiders on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT. The Toreros have a record of 5-4 overall and boast a 5-2 mark at home in the 2016 season. They've had a rigorous schedule thus far, however, as all four losses for San Diego were to ranked opponents.
"I know they are excited for California and two really tough road matches against great teams," Ramsay said. "We will enjoy the trip but I know our girls will be so ready to compete again and (Assistant Coach) David (Henry) and I are just excited to watch that process."
Senior Brittany Huxley leads MT in singles play with a record of 10-1, with nine of those wins coming at the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The only other Blue Raider with a winning record in singles play is Luisa Zirilli, who has posted a 6-4 record, mostly at No. 3.
Huxley and Giulia Squadrin are 7-3 in doubles action, mainly at the top of the doubles lineup, while Costanza Magazzini and Alory Pereira only have one blemish in doubles on the season, with a 6-1 record.
MT, currently 7-5, will return home on March 23 to face Murray State after five consecutive road matches.
