Raiders fall in heart breaker at WKU

MT loses series finale with Lady Toppers, drop series 2-1
The Raiders again had an early lead, but sloppy defense helped the Lady Toppers take the series as MT committed five errors in the game.
In the bottom of the first WKU earned a walk and a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Kelci Cheney came back strong with strikeouts of Brooke Holloway and Carleigh Chaumont in back-to-back at bats. But two Raiders errors extended the inning and allowed the Lady Toppers to take a 2-0 lead after the first.
Middle Tennessee responded quickly as Austyn Whaley walked and Carlie Jenkins doubled her home to plate the first Raiders' run. Deja Portillo followed with a groundout that scored Jenkins and MT tied the game 2-2, almost as quickly as they had given up the lead.
The Raiders gained their first lead in the third as they loaded the bases with just one out. Portillo grounded out on the right side of the infield to allow Morgan Harris to cross the plate and MT was up 3-2 after the top of the third.
WKU retied the game in the fourth as Holloway singled home Taylor Proctor and the tight game got even tighter at 3-3 after four innings.
In the fifth the Lady Toppers retook the lead as Kathryn Downing doubled home Lexie Norfleet. Two batters later Kelsey McGuff reached on an error that allowed Kayla Baker to score the insurance run and WKU led 5-3 after five.
Whaley earned another RBI when she singled to right in the seventh to allow Grove to score, but that's as close as the Raiders got as they fell 5-4 to WKU.
Kelci Cheney (14-10) took the loss for MT as she allowed all five Topper runs in 4.0 innings of work. Pattie Taylor threw 2.0 shutout innings out of the bullpen for MT, but the Raiders couldn't find a way back in the late innings.
The Raiders will be back at home for the first time in nearly two weeks as they'll play Austin Peay Tuesday at 4 p.m. in a game that was postponed from earlier this season due to rain.
