MT beats Lady Govs 3-2 behind clutch hits from Whaley, Harris
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (21-19) took care of Austin Peay (6-26) Tuesday 3-2 at Blue Raider Softball Field.
The Raiders found a way to score three runs on only four hits as they had to use three pitchers to keep the Lady Govs at bay.
Austyn Whaley started the scoring in the bottom of the first as she earned an RBI single that scored Precious Birdsong and Payton Grove for the early 2-0 lead. The score remained the same until the third inning.
After a single and a double moved runners to second and third in the third, Christiana Gable hit a sacrifice fly that brought in Kacy Acree and Austin Peay had cut the Raider lead to 2-1.
In the fifth the Lady Govs tied the score as Rikki Arkansas crossed the plate on an Acree base hit. Austin Peay had worked all the way back and the score was 2-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth and Birdsong standing on third base, Morgan Harris came to the plate and calmly deposited a 1-1 pitch over the center fielder's head for a double. The hit scored Birdsong and MT retook the lead 3-2.
Kelci Cheney got the start in the circle again and allowed just one run on one hit and struck out three in 4.0 innings of work. Megan Chocallo game in to start the fifth, but struggled as she allowed the tying run to score on three hits in just a third of an inning. Pattie Taylor (4-4) came in and shut the door to earn her fourth victory of the season, throwing 2.2 of two-hit ball.
The Raiders earned four hits, but spread them out among four different players. Birdsong, Harris, Whaley and Lauren Payne all had hits for MT in the game, two of them leading to all three Raider runs.
Middle Tennessee will be back on the road again Wednesday as they travel to Nashville to take on Belmont at Rose Park. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
