30-year record falls
NORWALK, Calif. – With only one event being completed Thursday night, the Blue Raider men's track & field team set yet another school record at the 58th annual Mt. SAC Relays.
In the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Shadrack Matelong and Geoffry Cheruiyot competed for Middle Tennessee.
"After missing the record by less than a second last year Shadrack (Matelong) put together a great performance tonight," said associate head coach Keith Vroman. "He was stepped on and spiked in the second lap fell back in the race a little bit and pushed back up to the lead to accomplish his goal."
Matelong, who narrowly missed breaking the MT steeplechase record, topped the previous school record, which was set in 1986 by Danny Green. Matelong finished seventh in the third heat of the race and was also seventh overall in 9:03.49.
"Geoffry started the day by producing a 12 second personal-best time, missing the school record by one second," said Vroman. "Proud of them both."
Cheruiyot, who competed in the second heat, placed fourth in 9:09.80. Cheruiyot's time is a personal-best for the sophomore, who finished 14th overall.
Amos Cheruiyot was the lone competitor in the 10,000 meter for the Blue Raiders and finished in a personal-best 29:53.84 for 39th place.
Middle Tennessee continues competition at the Mt. SAC Relays Friday.
