Jarreau collects five RBI in victory
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee's baseball needed some good fortune as the C-USA race reaches the halfway point this week.
Instead of waiting for it to happen the young, resilient Blue Raiders came off of the deck in resounding fashion to capture a 12-11 extra-inning win against visiting Charlotte in front of 823 fans at Reese Smith Jr., Field. Middle Tennessee improved to 5-0 in extra-innings this season.
Kevin Dupree scored the winning run from second after freshman Drew Huff supplied his second hit of the game – a walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning. Huff's hit enabled the Blue Raiders (15-19, 3-10) to improve to 7-0 all-time against Charlotte (15-20, 5-8). Five of the seven decisions have been decided by two runs or less.
"From the standpoint of executing what we were trying to do offensively, this was one of the best games of the season," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "I'm really proud of our team. We were up early and lost the lead, but we battled back and found a way to win. Our guys are battling hard and showing improvement. This was a big, big win for us, especially with how it all unfolded."
The top three players in the Middle Tennessee batting order were a combined 10-for-16 with five doubles, five RBI and eight runs scored.
Sensational shortstop Riley Delgado was 4-for-6 with three runs scored in the leadoff spot. Delgado raised his batting average to .408 with the first four-hit game of his Blue Raider career. It was his team-leading 18th multi-hit game of the season, but Delgado's offense was only part of the story. The slick-fielding shortstop was flashing his leather throughout the game and made three outstanding plays, including a sensational unassisted double play in the late innings of the nip-and-tuck affair.
Freshman standout Austin Dennis continued his sterling rookie campaign with a 3-for-5 effort that included three doubles and four runs scored in the two-hole. Junior mainstay Brad Jarreau was 3-for-5 with a double, five RBI and one run scored, and that was just the top three guys in the order.
Freshmen Blake Benefield and Huff also had multi-hit games. Benefield was 2-for-6 with a double and one RBI, and Huff was 2-for-5 with one RBI. Another freshman, A.J. Spencer, belted his first career home run – a leadoff solo blast in the bottom of the fourth inning.
McGuire started four freshmen in Benefield, Dennis, Huff and Spencer. The quartet combined to go 8-for-19 with one home run, four doubles, three RBI and five runs scored. All of the hits were huge but Huff's provided the game-winner in walkoff fashion.
"You don't get many opportunities to win games like that so when you get a chance you need to come through," Huff said. "I feel like I am settling in and playing better. This was a really good win for us, especially battling back after we lost the lead."
Sam Alton (3-2) was the third of three Blue Raider pitchers and earned the win with three innings of one-hit, shutout relief. Alton, who had missed two weeks recovering from an injury, was sharp. He struck out two and walked none as he controlled the 49ers lineup during his three-inning stint.
Freshman relief pitcher Carson Lester also was strong in the middle innings to keep the game in reach. Lester went 2-2/3 innings, scattered four hits and allowed two runs, one earned.
The Blue Raiders jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a three-spot in the bottom of the first. Jarreau's double plated Delgado with the first run. Aaron Aucker also had a sac fly and Benefield's double capped the scoring in the inning; however, Charlotte came right back with three in the top of the second to tie the score.
Middle Tennessee regained the lead in the fourth. Spencer ignited a four-run uprising with a solo home run to left field to open the inning. Jarreau had a two-run single and the Blue Raiders added another run when Dennis stole home to put Middle Tennessee on top 7-3.
Charlotte wouldn't go quietly.
The 49ers came back with six in the top of the fifth to take a 9-7 lead and chase starter Nate Hoffmann.
The Blue Raiders spent the remainder of the late innings bearing down on the mound and in the field while the offense started putting together a game-winning rally.
Middle Tennessee scored two in the sixth. Delgado singled to start the inning and Dennis second double put runners on second and third. Jarreau singled to score Delgado and Dupree added a sac fly to get Dennis home.
The Blue Raiders tied the score in the bottom of the eighth. Delado and Dennis set the table much as they did in the sixth. Delgado singled and Dennis doubled to put runners at second and third. Jarreau's sac fly plated Delgado and, as important, was deep enough to enable a hustling Dennis to tag from second and just beat the throw to third. One play later Dennis scored on a fielder's choice off of the bat of Dupree on another great hustle play to tie the score, 11-11.
That set the stage for another extra-inning classic. With one out in the 10th, Dupree was hit by a pitch, moved to second on Benefield's single and scored on Huff's walk-off single.
The Blue Raiders will look to secure their first C-USA series win when they play host to Charlotte Saturday at 4 p.m. Lefty Tyler Troutt will make the start on the mound.
