MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Getting off to a slow start put Middle Tennessee in an early hole from which it couldn't recover in the second game of a three-games series against Charlotte here Saturday afternoon.
Charlotte got to starter Tyler Troutt for six runs in the first three innings and held on for an 8-4 win to even the series. Blue Raider relief pitcher Reid Clements provided four-plus innings of two-hit baseball and gave his team a chance to rally.
Clements was outstanding upon entering the game in the fourth inning. He retired the first six 49ers and faced just three over the minimum in his four-plus innings of work.
Four Blue Raiders turned in multi-hit games, led by Kaleb King's 3-for-4 effort that included a run scored. Freshman AJ Spencer continued his impressive weekend, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Spencer connected for his second home run in as many games. He and freshman Blake Benefield are the only Blue Raiders with circuit clouts in consecutive games this season.
Riley Delgado continued to scorch the baseball. The junior shortstop was 2-for-5 with one RBI and has his batting average at .407. Delgado extended his hit streak to eight. Freshman Austin Dennis also was 2-for-4.
Charlotte struck for six in the first three innings before Clements came on and silenced its lineup and gave his team a chance to rally.
Middle Tennessee (15-20, 3-11) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Spencer connected for his second round tripper in as many games. With two outs, Blake Benefield singled and then Spencer unloaded on a Colton Laws offering and deposited it over the left field fence to cut the Charlotte lead to 6-2.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh when Middle Tennessee started to put together what looked like a promising inning when the first four Blue Raiders that batted reached via base hit.
Spencer started the uprising with a single. King and Chaz Vesser followed with base knocks to load the bases. Delgado then laced a single to right to score Spencer and when T.J. Nichting bobbled the ball, King came around to score as the Blue Raiders cut the deficit to 6-4. They still had two runners on and none out but a double play took them out of doing additional damage.
Charlotte (16-20, 6-8) came up with two big insurance runs with two outs in the top of the eighth to go back on top 8-4, and the Blue Raiders were not able to get closer.
The rubber game of the series will take place Sunday at noon. Sophomore lefty Jake Wyrick will be on the mound for the Blue Raiders.
