All Five Raiders in top 11 through 18 holes
Round 1 Results
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Through 18 holes of the Conference USA Championship at the Verandah Club, the Middle Tennessee women's golf team holds a three-stroke lead over Florida International.
The Blue Raiders opened the week with an eight-over 296 to sit three strokes clear of the Panthers, with Southern Miss and Old Dominion sticking close behind as well at 12-over par.
"The golf course isn't in quite as good shape as it was last year and the wind really picked up this afternoon, so that's part of why we were seeing some higher scores today," head coach Chris Adams said.
"We finished well today though after holes 13, 14, 15 got us a little bit," Adams added. "We had a couple of birdies from Jenna and Samantha on 18 to finish the day off strong."
All five Blue Raiders finished the day tied for 11th or better, with true freshman Hanley Long leading the way at even par (72). Long is currently in a tie for third place and just two strokes off the lead.
Redshirt freshman Jenna Burris enjoyed a solid first round as well and joins Long inside the top ten as she is currently tied for eighth at two-over par (74).
"To get this kind of production out of our freshmen competing for the first time at the conference tournament is amazing," Adams stated.
Middle's trio of upperclassmen – Avery George, Emily Miller and Samantha Gotcher – each sit in a tie for 11th place with first round scores of three-over 75.
"Avery and Emily started kind of slow with a couple of early bogeys but they really held it together very well the rest of the day and that's what is expected of them," Adams said.
Middle Tennessee leads the field with 13 birdies as a team while also recording the best par 4 (4.12, +6) and par 5 (5.05, +1) averages on day one.
"We know we have two more days to go, but we did a good job today of sticking to our game plan and we've put ourselves in a good spot moving forward," Adams added.
The Blue Raiders will start on hole one again tomorrow alongside FIU and Southern Miss. Gotcher is slated to tee off at 8:50 a.m. ET and will be followed by Miller, George, Burris and Long in 10-minute intervals.
