MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee and Tennessee battled through an outstanding baseball game that kept a packed house at Reese Smith Jr., Field in the stands until the end Tuesday.
Tennessee (21-16) scored two runs in the top of the ninth off of relief pitcher Garrett Ring and held on to defeat the Blue Raiders (16-21) in front of 2,156.
Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Austin Dennis singled with one out and came around to score on Brad Jarreau's double.
Tennessee tied it with a single run in the top of the third inning and took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fifth, but Middle Tennessee came back to tie it in the bottom of the frame.
AJ Spencer singled and later scored on a Riley Delgado sacrifice fly to even the score. The teams remained deadlocked until the Vols broke through for a pair of runs in the ninth.
Jarreau led Middle Tennessee's seven-hit attack with a 2-for-4 effort. Dennis, Drew Huff, Kaleb King and Will Schnure each had one hit.
Spencer started and scattered four hits in his three-inning stint, allowing one run. Sam Alton also pitched three innings, allowing one run. Junior Cody Puckett was outstanding. He retired all six batters he faced without allowing a baserunner.
