Series even 1-1 going to Sunday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Outstanding pitching has been on display throughout the series between Middle Tennessee and Rice.
Game two was nothing new as the two southpaws for each squad dueled into the late innings before Rice (16-10, 6-2) escaped Reese Smith Field with a 1-0 win to even the series 1-1 heading into Sunday's rubber game.
Rice starter Blake Fox (2-4) earned the win with seven innings of work. He scattered six hits and struck out five, while pitching around trouble in the middle innings. Middle Tennessee starter Tyler Troutt (1-5) suffered the tough-luck loss despite allowing two hits in 7-2/3 innings of work. He allowed just the one run. Junior relief ace Cody Puckett provided 1-1/3 innings of no-hit relief for the Blue Raiders (13-14, 2-6).
"You should not lose when you give up just two hits and one of them was an infield hit," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "Tyler deserved better. He deserved to win that game today. We just couldn't get him a run."
Charlie Warren had both of Rice's hits, a single just out of the reach of second baseman Kevin Sullivan in the third, and an infield hit to second base with one out in the eighth after Sullivan had exited the game with an injury.
With one out, Warren hit a ground ball to second that handcuffed Austin Dennis and beat out an infield hit. Warren stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He later scored on Ryan Chandler's sacrifice fly.
"In games like these you feel like one run or one thing can decide the game," McGuire said. "When (Warren) reached and stole second, then was able to get to third on the wild pitch, that put them in good shape. The play (Warren) reached on is a play Sullivan generally makes but we had just removed him from the game with an injury. It was just unfortunate. It's a tough game for either team to lose."
Middle Tennessee's best scoring chance came in the third when it had the bases loaded with one out and failed to score. Riley Delgado led off the inning with a walk. He was replaced at first when Dennis grounded into a fielder's choice. Brad Jarreau singled and Aaron Aucker walked to load the bases for Blake Benefield.
The freshman right fielder hit a hard grounder to short that resulted in an inning-ending double play. The Blue Raiders also had runners at first and second with one out in the first and didn't score. They had two on with two out in the bottom of the fourth but couldn't deliver a clutch hit.
"You can't put everything on the offense but you have to (today) because that was a game we should have won," McGuire said. "You just have to execute when you have opportunities."
The Blue Raiders will look to win the series when they send lefty Jake Wyrick to the mound Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
