Top three in order combined for seven hits
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee dug itself an early hole and couldn't overcome it in a 9-6 loss to Tennessee Tech at Reese Smith Jr., Field Wednesday.
The visiting Golden Eagles (21-14) jumped on starter Reid Clements for five runs in the first two innings and never trailed on the way to victory.
Riley Delgado led Middle Tennessee's 10-hit attack with a 3-for-5 effort that included two RBI. Austin Dennis also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-5 with one run scored and one RBI, and Brad Jarreau was 2-for-4 as the top three players in the order combined to go 7-for-14.
It wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
"Getting behind 5-0 and then 6-1 makes it very tough for us because our offense is not built for that," Blue Raider Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We had 10 hits and several baserunners but we couldn't get the big hit. It was very disappointing."
Will Jackson, Tanner McDivitt and Will Small had good pitching performances, combining for 5-1/3 innings, one hit and one run.
After falling behind in the early innings, Middle Tennessee (16-22) tried to mount a comeback.
Middle Tennessee got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second and then put a three-spot up in the bottom of the fourth to close to within 6-4.
Huff started the frame with a double and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. Delgado had a two-RBI single in the inning to score Kevin Dupree and Vaughn Shapen.
Tennessee Tech came back and tacked on two in the top of the fifth to extend its lead. The Blue Raiders go the run back in the bottom of the inning but couldn't narrow the gap more. Dennis singled and scored on a bases-loaded walk in the inning to get the Blue Raiders to within 8-5 but they could never get closer than three in the middle-to-late innings.
Middle Tennessee returns to conference action with a three-game series at UAB this weekend.
