MT earns three seed in C-USA Championship
HOUSTON – Middle Tennessee is set to play Charlotte in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship in a rematch of last year's tournament.
The 49ers came away with the win and advanced to the semifinals last year, but the Blue Raiders are hoping for a different outcome in Houston this season.
Charlotte enters the tournament with a 12-7 record and has only faced two ranked opponents in 2016, losing to No. 33 Duke, 0-7, and No. 28 Old Dominion, 2-5.
Besides C-USA foe ODU, the only other common opponent between the 49ers and Blue Raiders is the College of Charleston. MT beat the Cougars 5-2, while Charleston handed Charlotte a 4-3 loss in the regular season finale.
"Our preparation has been the same as always," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "We looked to make some individual improvements and keep pushing doubles details."
Borendame's lineup features several freshmen, including Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Ayed Zatar Cordero. The pair is 13-6 in doubles this season, and Morell has taken over the role of No. 1 singles and has excelled with a record of 16-5 overall, 7-3 at the top spot in the lineup.
"Our newcomers will need to learn fast and see how strong C-USA is in men's tennis," Borendame added. "We have not gotten to see all the other teams but this should shed light on how deep C-USA is in men's tennis."
The winner of MT-Charlotte will play the winner of Old Dominion and Florida Atlantic in the semifinal round on Saturday at noon.
Live stats and video feed from the tournament will be available. The C-USA Championship Central will be updated throughout the tournament.
