MT wins over Charlotte, 4-1
HOUSTON – Middle Tennessee's men's tennis team dominated doubles and carried that momentum over to singles play, as the Blue Raiders came away with the 4-1 win in the quarterfinals over Charlotte.
Miguel Negre Fernandez and Gian Issa swept their opponents at No. 2, 6-0, to kick off doubles action. Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore and Ayed Zatar Cordero followed suit at No. 1, winning 6-1 and clinching the first point in the match.
"The doubles point was key, and the guys executed and did everything right," MT head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "I could not have asked for any better doubles, probably the best overall doubles point of the year."
After the 49ers win at No. 2 singles, Issa put the Blue Raiders back on top with his 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 5. Robin Riethmueller was next to finish at the No. 6 spot with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
"Robin had stepped it up late in the season after battling a few injuries," Borendame added. "It's great to see our seniors stepping up both in singles and doubles."
Morell forced a third set after losing the first. In the deciding set, the freshman pulled away to win 6-2 and clinch the quarterfinals win for the Blue Raiders.
A familiar foe will await MT in the semifinal round, as Old Dominion took down FAU, 4-1, in their quarterfinal match.
The Blue Raiders and Monarchs met this past Sunday, where ODU got the best of the visitors, 4-3.
Negre, Zatar and Riethmueller all earned singles wins in Norfolk last week for the Blue Raiders.
"In our next match, we will compete hard and it will come down to the big points in singles and doubles," said Borendame. "We are looking forward to the match."
