Men’s Tennis season ends in semifinals
HOUSTON – Higher seeds have prevailed in every match of the 2016 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship, and Old Dominion continued that trend on Saturday in the semifinals.
The Monarchs picked up where they left off the last time they faced Middle Tennessee. The doubles point went to ODU after it won at the No. 1 and 2 spots.
Ayed Zatar Cordero tied the match up at one point apiece when he started off singles action with a dominant 6-1, 6-3 performance at No. 2. The Monarchs controlled the next three points in the match, as they advance to the championship game on Sunday vs. top-seeded Rice.
The second set was tight at No. 3 with Dima Zyhmantovich being competitive throughout the set, but ODU's Michael Weindl took the match, 6-3, 6-4, ending Zyhmantovich's career as a Blue Raider.
MT freshman Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore took his second set to a tiebreak after barely being edged in the first set. However, he was unable to come away with the victory, as the Monarchs won that match, 6-4, 7-6 (8-6).
The Monarchs clinched at the No. 5 spot in the lineup in another match that went down to the wire. Zvonimir Podvinski got the best of Gian Issa by a narrow margin, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
Two Blue Raiders were unable to finish their singles matches after ODU clinched the match. Senior Robin Riethmueller won his first set, but dropped his second to send it to a third set. Miguel Negre Fernandez was also in his final set when the match was called.
MT's 2016 campaign ends with a record of 17-10, including a 12-6 mark at home.
C-USA's Championship Central will have updates and information on the tournament, as well as the championship game tomorrow between ODU and Rice.
