BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee had difficulty solving a red-hot UAB team as the Blazers completed the weekend sweep with a 8-0 blanking of the Blue Raiders here Sunday afternoon.
The Blue Raiders (16-25, 4-14) struggled to put together consecutive hits throughout the game, and UAB used one big inning to break the game open.
Senior Garrett Ring earned his first start of the season Sunday as Head Coach Jim McGuire had to adjust the weekend rotation after ace Nate Hoffmann was held out of the UAB series. Ring pitched well through the first three innings but had to be pulled in favor of lefty Cody Puckett in the midst of a four-run Blazer uprising in the bottom of the fourth.
Puckett put together a solid showing in his 2-1/3 innings stint. Puckett allowed two hits, struck out three and walked none before giving way to AJ Spencer to start the bottom of the seventh.
If not for bad luck, Middle Tennessee would have had no luck against UAB. The fourth inning was a case in point.
Trailing 1-0, Middle Tennessee appeared to finally get something going in the top of the fourth when two of its first three batters reached after Riley Delgado singled and Brad Jarreau coaxed a one-out walk to put runners at first and second. Designated hitter Aaron Aucker then laced a line drive that was snagged by the shortstop and enabled him to double Delgado off of second for the inning-ending double play.
Any momentum the Blue Raiders developed certainly shifted after the top half of the fourth. UAB came back and padded its lead in the bottom of the inning. The first three Blazer batters reached without hitting a ball beyond the pitcher's mound. The first batter walked the next two reached on bunt singles. UAB turned the fortune into a four-run inning and, by the time the dust had settled, it owned a 5-0 lead.
UAB tacked on a run with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
Middle Tennessee's batters had difficulty getting anything going in the early innings. Delgado's leadoff single in the fourth proved to be the team's only hit until Spencer collected an infield hit with two outs in the seventh. Shane Connahan delivered a pinch-hit single in the ninth for the team's only other hit.
The Blue Raiders will continue their four-game road swing at Tennessee Tech Wednesday.
