MT loses series finale with Marshall, drop all three games
HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Middle Tennessee (23-24, 6-12) never stopped fighting, but ultimately lost to Marshall (25-23, 9-9) in the series finale Sunday 7-2.
Jordan Dixon (20-17) was good again in the circle as she picked up the complete game win, allowing just two runs on five hits and struck out another eight Raiders.
Payton Grove had a good day at the plate as she went 2-for-3 on the afternoon and earned MT's first RBI of the weekend.
Kelci Cheney (14-13) took her second loss of the weekend as she allowed four runs on seven hits in 3.0 innings of work.
Marshall started the scoring in the second as Elicia D'Orazio singled to left to bring home Hayden Ellis. Morgan Zerkle followed with an RBI base hit to center to score Abigail Estrada. After a walk to Kaelynn Greene, D'Orazio scored on a Katalin Lucas sacrifice fly to make the score 3-0 Herd after two innings.
With one out in the third, Briana Daiss hit her ninth home run of the season. The solo shot to straight away center increased Marshall's lead to 4-0.
Marshall loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth, and Lucas followed with an RBI groundout to short that brought home D'Orazio. Two batters later Raquel Escareno singled to center to score Zerkle and Greene and the Marshall lead ballooned to 7-0 after four innings.
The top of the fifth began well for MT as Austyn Whaley and Carlie Jenkins led off with two singles. Grove followed with a base hit to center to score Whaley and the Raiders were on the board for the first time in the series. Two batters later Precious Birdsong reached on a bunt single, and Jenkins scored the second run when third base Lucas threw to first, where no one was covering. MT was finally on the scoreboard and cut the Marshall lead to 7-2.
Marshall came right back in the bottom half, however. Madi Marshall led off with a single, then two batters later Zerkle tripled home Madi Marshall to restore the six run lead 8-2.
The Herd added another run in the sixth as D'Orazio earned a two out RBI single. The infield base hit brought home Daiss and gave Marshall a 9-2 advantage.
Middle Tennessee will be back home Tuesday when they finish their non-conference slate with Belmont. It'll be the second time this season facing the Bruins, as the Raiders defeated them at Rose Park in Nashville 11-6. It was a game that saw MT and Birdsong set school records for stolen bases. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
