MT takes on Bruins as they play first of final four home games
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee softball opens their final home stand of the season Tuesday as they host the Belmont Bruins at 6 p.m.
The Raiders defeated Belmont earlier this season at Rose Park in Nashville 11-6. MT set a school record for 10 stolen bases in the game, and Precious Birdsong set an individual school record as she stole four bases on the night.
Kelci Cheney started the game and got through 3.0 innings as she allowed just two runs on six hits. Pattie Taylor pitched in relief and gave up four runs on five hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
MT scored runs in five of the seven innings as they plated single runs in each the first, second and fourth innings. The Raiders crossed the plate three times in the third and five more in the sixth as they scored 11 runs on nine hits to beat Belmont 11-6.
The Bruins have gone 1-6 since the meeting as their only win came at Eastern Kentucky on April 17. Belmont defeated the Colonels 7-6 as each of the three games were decided by just over one run on average.
Belmont is currently on a four-game losing streak and lost two of their last three games by run rule, and the third in extra innings.
Lexi Rouse leads the Bruins in batting average as she's hitting .333 on the season. Rouse is tied for the team lead in doubles and home runs as she has seven and five respectively. That has helped to up her slugging percentage to .578, by far the best in Bruins lineup.
Belmont has shown patience at the plate this season as four players have 10 or more walks, three of them with more than 15. Jordan Spicer has been good with runners on base as she has 22 RBIs to lead the Bruins despite not having a single home run this season.
Ashley Johnson got the start in the circle against the Blue Raiders last month, and she currently has the second best ERA on the team at 3.69 with a 4-7 record. Rouse and Shelby Willard also pitched against the Raiders and Rouse as the team's best record at 5-5.
Middle Tennessee is coming off a tough weekend in which they were swept at Marshall. The Raiders failed to score a run in either of Saturday's game as they lost 8-0 and 6-0. The offense was a little better Sunday, but a 9-2 loss finished off the sweep.
MT is looking to end what is now a four-game losing streak as first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday.
