Coached and recruited Goff at Cal
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee offensive coordinator Tony Franklin's former protégé, Jared Goff, was taken Thursday night as the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Goff, coached by Franklin the last three years at Cal, was picked by the Los Angeles Rams and will team up in the backfield with former Blue Raider Benny Cunningham.
Franklin, who also recruited Goff to Cal, was a guest at tonight's draft in Chicago by Goff.
"I believe he's as good a quarterback to come out in the last several years," Franklin told the Daily News Journal in early April. "If you're looking to start a franchise quarterback, he has all the intangibles to be that. We asked him to go through progressions one through five, change progressions and really do everything an NFL quarterback can do," Franklin said.
During their three seasons together, Goff was a three-year starter, set 26 school records, broke the Pac-12 single-season records in passing yardage (4,719 yards) and passing touchdowns (43) and took Cal to its first bowl game since 2011.
