Huxley, Squadrin on All-Conference teams
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – After leading Middle Tennessee in singles action with a record of 17-5, senior Brittany Huxley has earned All-Conference USA First Team Singles, the C-USA office announced today.
Huxley and her doubles partner Giulia Squadrin were named to All-Conference USA Third Team Doubles after posting a 13-5 mark, with all but one of those wins coming at the No. 1 doubles spot.
Head coach Charlie Ramsay led his squad to a 14-8-1 record in his first season at the helm of the women's tennis team at MT.
Along with the team-best singles record of 17-5, Huxley ended the season with seven wins in her last 10 matches. She enjoyed a successful year off the court as well, as she earned Commissioner's Honor Roll. Huxley reeled off seven straight singles victories from Jan. 30 to Feb. 20. She worked fast, with 14 straight set wins on the season.
Huxley fared well on the road also, as she took a 6-1, 6-2 victory on the road at Louisville as the Blue Raiders won 4-3, and won, 6-1, 7-6, on the road at in-state rival Memphis to help MT get the 4-3 win. Her biggest win of the season came at No. 2 singles vs. No. 69 Michigan State, 6-0, 6-1, on Jan. 24.
"Brittany had a first team type of year and I'm very happy she made it," Ramsay said. "She plays a spot in the lineup where you never have an easy match, so for her to perform the way she did this year was great."
The pair of Huxley and Squadrin teamed up for 10 consecutive doubles wins, all at the No. 1 spot, from Feb. 7 to April 9. The win streak started on the road at Louisville, as they took the victory, 6-3. The combo won over C-USA foe UAB by a score of 6-4 on Feb. 14 in Birmingham. They also earned a 6-3 victory against No. 53 South Florida on March 20 and took a 7-5 win over VCU on March 26.
For Squadrin, this is her second consecutive year with the title of Third Team Doubles.
"Giulia spent all summer and fall working hard to get back to compete with us," Ramsay added. "She was frustrated at times because she couldn't play her best tennis, but she worked so hard off the court and exceeded expectations for us."
The doubles combo can now reflect on their time at MT and their great accomplishment as seniors.
"The two are roommates and have great chemistry together," said Ramsay. "Their styles of play fit very well together and they just really love playing together."
