Ampomah repeats at Penn, Raiders finish at Memphis

PHILADELPHIA, Pa./Memphis, Tenn. – With the Middle Tennessee track & field teams at two different meets Saturday, the Blue Raiders battle two different weather conditions to complete the final events at the Penn Relays and the Memphis Invitational.
 
At the historic Penn Relays, John Ampomah became the first back-to-back champion for the Blue Raiders, winning the javelin with a throw of season-best 77.81 meters (255-3). Ampomah earned his NCAA fourth-best distance on his third attempt.
 
Also competing in the field events for the Blue Raiders were Jacob Patten, Vincent Okot and Phillip Smith.
 
Patten cleared 2.08 meters (6-9.75) in the high jump to place seventh, while Vincent Okot and Phillip Smith competed in the triple jump, finishing ninth (15.12m/49-7.25) and 10th (14.81m/48-7.25), respectively.
 
Elizabeth Dadzie was the lone member of the Blue Raider women's squad to compete Saturday at Penn, finishing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.58.
 
At the Memphis Invitational, Middle Tennessee and the other teams battled tough weather conditions, battling with heavy rain and wind, but were able to earn many quality distances and times.
 
Barbara Vilson notched the best finish of the day for the Blue Raiders, placing second in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:02.48. Vilson narrowly earned the victory with Memphis' Melinda Murdock winning the event with a time of 1:02.17.
 
In the long jump, the Abdullah-Muhammad sisters competed, with Qetwurah Abdullah-Muhammad finishing fourth with a leap of 6.03 meters (19-9.5), while Atarah Abdullah-Muhammad finished seventh with a jump of 5.75 meters (18-10.5).
 
Atsu Nyamadi competed in the most events for Middle Tennessee at Memphis, competing in the high jump, triple jump and discus.
 
Nyamadi, a 2015 NCAA Outdoor Second-Team All-American, earned his best finishes in the high jump (1.98m/6-6) and triple jump (14.35/47-1), placing seventh in each event. In the discus, the Ghana native finished 15th after a throw of 43.50 meters (142-8.75).
 
Middle Tennessee continues competition at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford Sunday.
