Cheney throws four perfect innings in MT win
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Middle Tennessee (19-16) was nearly perfect Tuesday as they defeated SC State (4-18) 11-0 in five innings to begin their quick two-game road trip.
Kelci Cheney, in fact, was perfect as she pitched the first four innings. Cheney (13-9) earned her thirteenth victory of the season as she allowed the Lady Bulldogs nothing and struck out four in 4.0 perfect innings of work.
Pattie Taylor came in for the fifth inning and gave up a lead-off single to Jasmine Greer. But the Raider defense rolled up Greer in 5-4-3 double play off of a Deanna Sullivan grounder, then Taylor induced another ground ball from Tamaya McQueary to end the game. MT pitching faced the minimum on the afternoon, facing just 15 batters to record the necessary 15 outs to complete the five inning affair.
Middle Tennessee got on the scoreboard early as Precious Birdsong led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, her first of the season. In the second inning Carly Jenkins hit her third round-tripper of the year, this one getting over the fence in center field. Payton Grove scored on the two-run shot and the Raiders led 3-0 after only two innings.
In the third Kristen Uselton singled home Jenkins with two outs and in the fourth MT scored two more as Birdsong and Morgan Harris each had RBI singles and the lead doubled to 6-0 after four innings of play.
The fifth inning was a patient one for MT as the Raiders drew two bases loaded walks from Harris and Dani Munoz to bring home Lauren Payne and Birdsong respectively. Deja Portillo and Austyn Whaley both earned RBI singles as well to score three more Raider runs to end the game, up 11-0.
Middle Tennessee will be back in action Wednesday in Chattanooga as they will face the Mocs at 5 p.m. central time.
