Buccaneers win battle over Blue Raiders

MT drops 6-1 decision to ETSU
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's tennis suffered a setback on Wednesday on the road at East Tennessee State by a score of 6-1.
The Buccaneers struck first by winning the doubles point. ETSU took 6-1 victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Ayed Zatar Cordero and Luis Morillo Diaz were unable to finish their match at No. 3, but were ahead, 4-3, when their match was halted.
ETSU's Ismael Merino opened up singles play by winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Although the match at No. 4 ended in two sets, MT's Gian Issa fought hard, but was unable to come away with the win. ETSU took the win by a narrow margin, 7-5, 6-4.
Robin Riethmueller earned the Blue Raiders' only point in the match by taking a 6-1, 6-4 win at the bottom of the lineup.
The match was clinched with a close win at No. 2 by the Buccaneers, 6-3, 6-4.
MT dropped two matches that went to third sets to finish the match. ITA ranked No. 85 singles player David Biosca took the win for ETSU, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, followed by a third set score of 7-5 in favor of the Buccaneers at No. 3.
Next up for MT will be a Conference USA showdown with UTSA. The Roadrunners are 3-18 on the season, with wins over Louisiana-Lafayette, DePaul and Incarnate Word.
UTSA started the season off ranked No. 66 by the ITA and have played just four home matches this season. The Roadrunners have a record of 0-12 against ranked opponents this season.
The Blue Raiders return to the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center on April 12 at 2 p.m. for Senior Day against Austin Peay.
