Raiders take tough loss to Mocs, 8-5
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – Middle Tennessee (19-17) lost a 5-2 lead and fell to Chattanooga (20-19) 8-5 in a hard fought battle Wednesday.
The Raiders began the game with a bang as Precious Birdsong, Deja Portillo and Morgan Harris earned three straight singles to get things started. Harris's base hit scored Birdsong and Portillo and MT had a 2-0 lead after just half an inning.
Chattanooga came back to tie the score in the bottom half as they began with two hits and were helped with a Raider error. Cricket Blanco's single scored Sam Taylor and Alyssa Taylor and the score was tied 2-2 after one inning.
Middle Tennessee took the lead right back as Kristen Uselton singled home Carlie Jenkins in the second inning to give her team a 3-2 lead after the second inning, but they weren't done yet.
In the third Morgan Harris was hit by a pitch with one out, then scored on Dani Munoz's triple. It was the 25th RBI for Munoz on the season, tying her with Kirstyn Cuccia for the team lead. Munoz then crossed the plate on Austyn Whaley's ground out and the Raiders lead increased to 5-2 after only three innings.
Cheney settled down after the first, pitching three straight scoreless and retiring nine of 12. But she ran into some trouble in the fifth.
An error, walk and sacrifice bunt moved two runners into scoring position for the Mocs in the fifth. Criket Blanco singled up the middle to score two runs, then she scored when Anyssa Robles doubled and the game was quickly tied 5-5 after five innings.
Chattanooga was not done as they led off the bottom of the sixth with three straight hits off Megan Chocallo. The single, double, single combination scored two more runs and the Mocs took their first lead of the game. A sacrifice fly by Ashley Corum scored another and Chattanooga's lead increased to 8-5.
Middle Tennessee will travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky this weekend as they will take on arch rival WKU in a three-game set. Action begins Saturday with a double-header that will start at 1 p.m. Sunday's series finale will begin at noon.
