MT pounds out 19 hits
Bats that had been silent in recent weeks came to life as the Blue Raiders (18-31) completed the season sweep of Austin Peay (28-18), which had won three of four coming into the game.
Middle Tennessee scored early and often to shell-shock the Govs on the way to the Blue Raiders' highest-scoring output since hanging 19 against Western Illinois, Feb. 23, 2015. Middle Tennessee jumped on the Govs for three in the first, added six in the second and one in the third to set the early tone.
"We jumped on them early, but I thought we stayed balanced and aggressive at the plate and got some things done where we haven't as much in the past," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "Maybe this will be a good springboard into the weekend (at Old Dominion)."
Freshman standout Austin Dennis led the hit parade with a sterling 4-for-4 performance that included a double, three RBI, one run scored and he also walked twice.
"It was a big game for me and big for my confidence," Dennis said. "I was coming off a couple tough games so I was glad to bounce back and help the team. It was a good team win. We hit well, played good defense and the pitching was good and the pitchers worked their way out of what jams there were."
Dennis was not the only Blue Raider to shine. Aaron Aucker and Blake Benefield were outstanding, combining to go 6-for-10 in the middle of the order. Aucker was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. Benefield's power surge continued with a pair of doubles included in his 3-for-5 effort that included three RBI and two runs scored.
AJ Spencer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and one RBI, and Kaleb King supplied his first home run of the season as part of his multi-hit performance. King was 2-for-5 with three RBI and he also scored twice. King homered as part of a five-run fifth as Middle Tennessee put the exclamation point on its overwhelming win.
Riley Delgado (1-for-5, three runs), Brad Jarreau (1-for-6, two runs, double), Andrew Cash (1-for-1, RBI, run, double), Drew Huff (1-for-5, run, RBI) and Austin Sistrunk (1-for-1, RBI) also factored in Middle Tennessee's victory.
Carson Lester (2-0) earned the win in relief of Sam Alton. Lester worked 2-1/3 innings, allowed one hit and one run. Alton worked 4-2/3 innings and scattered seven hits. He allowed two runs but with a rising pitch count and a weekend series looming, Alton couldn't get through the fifth to earn the win. Will Jackson and Andrew Wright each worked one inning.
Middle Tennessee opened the scoring when Benefield laced a one-out double into right center in the top of the first to stake the Blue Raiders to a 1-0 lead. Dennis has proven to be a clutch hitter at times this season and he delivered in such a situation in the first when he supplied a two-out single to drive in two runs. It also added to Dennis' team lead in both RBI and two-out RBI.
The Blue Raiders broke it open with a six-run second. They scored five of the runs with two outs.
Middle Tennessee will play its final C-USA road series at Old Dominion this weekend.
