Aucker extends hit streak
NORFOLK, Va. – Middle Tennessee put forth a strong showing in the series opener against Old Dominion but came up on the short end of a 6-4 setback at Bud Metheny Complex Friday night.
Aaron Aucker and Austin Dennis led Middle Tennessee with two hits each, and Blake Benefield blasted his team-leading sixth circuit clout in the setback.
"We had a big inning and we squared some balls up, but we just couldn't get it done," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "We did some good things, but we didn't do enough good things to win the game."
In fact, the Blue Raiders were far too charitable in a two-run game. They issued ODU (30-19, 13-12) nine walks, hit a batter and made one error resulting in 11 free passes.
"Those were just bases we gave them without making them earn them and in a two-run game that's a big difference," McGuire said. "We battled in the late innings to give ourselves a chance but their relief pitcher (Nick Hartman) is one of the best velocity guys in the conference, and (starter Sam) Sinnen is a solid Friday night starter."
Aucker continued his solid play with a 2-for-4 effort and one run scored. Aucker extended his hitting streak to seven games. Dennis had another stellar outing, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. He reached base in his first two at-bats to stretch his streak of reaching base to eight straight before the Monarchs finally got him out in the sixth inning.
Two more freshmen – Benefield and AJ Spencer – also came up big. Benefield connected on his sixth home run, which is tied for 10th in the league and tied for second in C-USA only games. Spencer's first career triple also drive in a run.
Riley Delgado, Drew Huff and Will Schnure also had base knocks as the Blue Raiders out-hit ODU, 9-7, but couldn't come through with enough clutch hits to earn the victory.
Middle Tennessee (18-32, 4-21) scored all of its runs in the fourth. Aucker delivered a one-out single and Benefield followed with a mammoth blast into the left center power alley 375 feet away, to supply a 2-0 lead.
With two outs in the inning, Dennis collected his second hit in as many at-bats before Spencer stepped to the plate and smashed an opposite-field triple to right center that just missed leaving the park and provided a 3-0 lead. Schnure followed with a solid single to left to score Spencer and stake Middle Tennessee to a 4-0 lead.
ODU came back with one in the bottom of the inning and tied it with three in the fifth as the Monarchs chased starter Jake Wyrick. Garrett Ring allowed two runs in the sixth as ODU took a 6-4 lead and made it stand.
Middle Tennessee will look to even the series when Spencer goes to the mound for game two Saturday. First pitch is 2 p.m.
