MT falls at ODU 6-2
NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman Blake Benefield continued his torrid weekend but it was not enough as Middle Tennessee dropped the rubber game of a three-game series against Old Dominion, 6-2, here Sunday afternoon.
Benefield capped one of the most dominant weekends by a Blue Raider in recent history with a 2-for-3 performance that included his team-leading eighth home run and both of the team's RBI. For the weekend, Benefield was 7-for-13 with three home runs and 11 RBI, nine of which came with two outs.
Benefield hit a first-inning, two-run home run for the third straight game to become the first Blue Raider to homer in three straight games since Will Skinner accomplished the feat in 2010.
Benefield was the only Blue Raider with a multi-hit game as he extended his hit streak to six. Riley Delgado was 1-for-3 with one run scored, and Austin Dennis, Brad Jarreau and AJ Spencer had one hit each.
Sam Alton (3-3) suffered the loss despite a dominant effort through the first four innings. Unfortunately, for Alton, he was unable to finish the fifth and gave way to Cody Puckett, who provided 3-2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout baseball to give the Blue Raiders an opportunity to rally. Alton allowed one run through the first four innings and struck out seven, while walking just one, but he surrendered five straight hits after getting the first out in the fifth as ODU rallied to take a 6-2 lead.
Benefield staked Middle Tennessee to an early 2-0 lead for the third straight game with his first-inning, two-out blast that also scored Delgado, who had walked. That would be the extent of the scoring for Middle Tennessee although the Blue Raiders got the leadoff batter aboard in the first five innings.
"We had our chances and were hitting the ball well early, getting people on base, but we couldn't get them in," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "If we are able to get three or four runs there it flips the other way."
ODU scored one in the bottom of the first and then broke through for five in the fifth to build a 6-2 cushion.
Middle Tennessee complete its eight-game road swing at Belmont Tuesday at 5 p.m.
