Becomes second Blue Raider to win honor
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Tennessee Sports Writers have voted Middle Tennessee guard Brea Edwards their Player of the Year after she helped lead Middle Tennessee to the C-USA women's basketball championship and a berth in the Dallas Regional in 2016.
The Tennessee Sports Writers Association (TSWA) rewarded Edwards' efforts by voting her the Player of the Year in Tennessee Friday. She is the first Blue Raider women's basketball player to win the honor since Alysha Clark went back-to-back in 2009 and 2010.
"This is a great honor for Brea and she's very deserving," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "There have been some outstanding basketball players come through Middle Tennessee so to be the first to do something or win an award of this prominence says a lot about Brea and the year she had. On top of that, you are talking about the top women's basketball players in the state of Tennessee – regardless of classification. This is a huge honor."
The TSWA does not separate nominees based on Division I, II, III, NAIA and such. All collegiate players in Tennessee are eligible. Edwards will be honored during an awards luncheon in Hermitage, July 8.
Edwards led the Blue Raiders in scoring (17.7) and rebounding (82) and was among the nation's Top 25 in five categories, including 3-point field goal percentage, 3-point field goals per game, 3-point field goals made, free throw percentage and minutes played during her extraordinary senior season.
She made three or more 3-pointers in a game 18 times and connected on five or more triples in seven contests. Edwards also posted nine double-doubles during the campaign.
Edwards was a First Team All-Conference USA selection, a four-time C-USA Player of the Week honoree and also was named to the C-USA Championship All-Tournament Team after Middle Tennessee won the league tourney.
"I can't tell you how much this means to me," Edwards said. "When you are talking about all of the great talent and programs in Tennessee that kind of puts everything in perspective. I am honored, but I can assure you none of this would have happened without my teammates. We had a great year and a great run during the second half of the season. It was the time of my life, and I am so glad to have been part of the program at Middle Tennessee."
Edwards finished second on the Middle Tennessee single-season 3-point field goals made list with 98 and was seventh on the single-season 3-point field goal percentage charts (.410). She finished second in Conference USA in 3-point field percentage, third in scoring and eighth in rebounding while playing 37.1 minutes per game for the Blue Raiders.
