MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – NCAA Semi-finalist Florida State and in-state SEC foe Tennessee will highlight the 2016 Blue Raider women's soccer schedule, which was released Wednesday by head coach Aston Rhoden.
Middle Tennessee nearly went undefeated in 2015 against the 11 teams that return to the 2016 schedule – tallying seven wins and three draws to just one loss in those matches – but face a more difficult non-conference schedule with the addition of the two ACC and SEC opponents.
"The 2016 schedule will be very challenging and was designed to help prepare us for postseason play," Rhoden said. "With a strong non-conference schedule including in-state rivalries and programs with national prominence we feel this schedule will help us compete at all levels.
"l am very excited for our team and look forward to the challenge ahead."
Middle Tennessee will have two exhibition games on the front end to prepare for a tough non-conference schedule, traveling to Kennesaw State on Aug. 11 before hosting Martin Methodist on Aug. 14.
The regular season will kick off on Aug. 19 as the Blue Raiders welcome Jacksonville State – the third-place finishers in the OVC in 2015 – to the Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
The Raiders will face Jackson State in a neutral site contest at Vanderbilt on Aug. 25 and then return home to face Florida State on Aug. 28.
The Seminoles, a perennial national title contender, advanced to the semi-finals of the 2015 NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed without allowing a goal until their loss to national runner-up Duke.
Middle closes out the non-conference portion of its 2016 schedule with four consecutive in-state opponents, beginning with a Thursday night game at Lipscomb on Sept. 1.
A pair of back-to-back home games will ensue as the Raiders host Belmont on Sept. 4 and Tennessee Tech – the second-place finishers in the OVC a season ago – on Sept. 9 before heading to Knoxville on Sept. 11 to take on Tennessee.
MT faced just two of the four in-state rivals in 2015, defeating Tennessee Tech 1-0 in a double overtime match in Cookeville and earning a 2-2 draw against Lipscomb at home.
The Blue Raiders play only one match the first two weekends of Conference USA play, hosting UAB on Sept. 18 before taking a road trip to UTSA for a Sept. 24 meeting.
Middle's first two-match weekend in C-USA competition features home games against Florida Atlantic (Sept. 30) and FIU (Oct. 2).
The Blue Raiders then go north on Oct. 7 to meet archrival WKU in a Friday night contest. The two-game road swing will conclude with a match at Marshall on Oct. 9.
The following weekend MT hosts Rice (Oct. 14) before their final home game of the 2016 season against UTEP on Oct. 16.
The regular season will conclude for the Blue Raiders on a two-game road swing at LA Tech (Oct. 21) and Southern Miss (Oct. 23).
The 2016 Conference USA Championship will take place from Nov. 2-6 on the campus of the Charlotte 49ers.
