But Blue Raiders fall 8-4
RUSTON, La. – Riley Delgado was among the nation's Top 25 in four statistical categories entering Middle Tennessee's weekend series at Louisiana Tech.
The junior shortstop and Blue Raider All-American candidate continued to maintain his lofty status among the nation's elite after going 3-for-5 with a run scored in the Blue Raiders' 8-4 setback against the Bulldogs Friday night.
Delgado, who is in the Top 25 for batting average (23rd), hits (20th), on-base percentage (25th) and toughest to strikeout (18th), raised his batting average to .406 with his 24th multi-hit game. It marked the ninth time Delgado has had three or more hits in a game.
Brad Jarreau was 2-for-5 with one run scored and Drew Huff was 2-for-4 with a double. Will Schnure reached base three times and was 1-for-2 with one run scored. Austin Dennis supplied a RBI double in the setback.
Jake Wyrick (3-6) suffered the loss on the mound for the Blue Raiders.
The game got off to a favorable start for the Blue Raiders, who struck for three runs on five hits in the first inning. In fact, the first four Blue Raiders to bat reached base via base hits.
Delgado laced a single to right field to start the game. Dennis followed with a double to chase Delgado across the plate for a 1-0 lead. Jarreau singled to right, putting runners at first and third for Aaron Aucker, who singled to right to score Dennis. Middle Tennessee increased its edge to 3-0 when Blake Benefield lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Jarreau.
The Bulldogs (29-14, 13-9) battled back with one run in the first and two in the second to tie the score, 3-3, but Middle Tennessee (17-29, 4-18) regained the lead with one run in the fourth. Delgado was once again in the middle of the action. With one out, Schnure singled up the middle. Delgado followed with his second hit and when the ball got past the right fielder, Schnure was able to score all the way form first for a 4-3 Middle Tennessee lead.
The Blue Raider advantage was short lived as the Bulldogs came off the deck with two runs in the fifth to go on top 5-4, and then pushed the lead to 7-4 with two more in the sixth.
Middle Tennessee will send freshman A.J. Spencer to the mound for Saturday's game, which will be televised by American Sports Network. First pitch is 3 p.m.
