MT in 12th after 36 holes at Shoal Creek
Round 2 Results
Highlights
SHOAL CREEK, Ala. – A second straight windy day at the challenging Shoal Creek leaves Middle Tennessee in 12th place after 36 holes of NCAA Regional play.
The Blue Raiders find themselves at 51-over par and 13 strokes back from the top six, which is where they will need to finish on Saturday to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships.
Middle started the day off on the 10th tee and went 18-over as a team on the back nine holes. The Raiders favored the front nine once again on Friday, going 11-over after the turn on day two.
"It was another tough day out there and the scores are all pretty high," head coach Chris Adams said. "It's frustrating when your scores are pretty low all year long and you get on a course like this and it's backing down to the players. It's winning right now."
Avery George turned in the team's low score for the second consecutive day at 5-over par 77. Her two-day total of 153 (+9) places her in a tie for 25th in the field of 96 golfers.
Fellow senior Emily Miller holds the second best 36-hole total for the Blue Raiders at 13-over par (157) and is tied for 53rd. She was able to improve on her first round score of 7-over 79 when she fired eight straight pars to end the day and log a 6-over 78 for round two.
"Emily had a good stretch their where she had eight pars in a row," Adams said. "They sort of break up the golf course in two nines although as a coach you would like them to break it up each hole, one shot at a time.
"They tend to kind of take it nine holes at a time and when they struggle on the back nine you just kind of re-focus and re-start your round again."
Hanley Long is in the middle of the pack for the Blue Raiders after she carded a 10-over round on day two. The true freshman is in tie for 62nd at 16-over for the tournament.
Junior Samantha Gotcher bounced back from a slow start to go 2-over through her last 11 holes and finish day two with an 8-over 80. She sits just behind Long in a tie for 64th in the field with 18 holes to go.
Jenna Burris felt the difficulty of Shoal Creek the most for the Blue Raiders in round two and sits in a tie for 79th at 20-over par (164).
Middle Tennessee will be paired with Notre Dame and New Mexico State for the final day at Shoal Creek with Burris leading things off at 7:30 a.m. off the 10th tee. She will be followed by Gotcher, Long, Miller and George.
