MT falls 2-1 vs. LA Tech
BOX SCORE
RUSTON, La. – Freshman AJ Spencer pitched a masterpiece against Louisiana Tech but the Blue Raider bats were not able to solve the Bulldogs' pitching staff in a 2-1 setback here Saturday afternoon.
Riley Delgado and Brad Jarreau continued to swing hot bats, each turning in a multi-hit performance. Delgado enjoyed his team-leading 25th multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 and raising his batting average to .408. Jarreau was 2-for-3 with a double and he scored the teams only run.
Aaron Aucker was 1-for-3 and provided Middle Tennessee's only RBI. Blake Benefield, Drew Huff and Kevin Sullivan also had base hits for the Blue Raiders.
Spencer gave his team every opportunity to win as he matched up on the mound with a stellar performance. He went a season-high seven innings, scattered four hits and allowed two runs. He struck out four and walked one but suffered the tough setback on the mound.
"Take nothing away from AJ. He was outstanding today," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "He competed great. He was really, really good. This was just his second conference start. He showed us a lot today with his competitiveness and how he went after their hitters."
Middle Tennessee took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jarreau provided a two-out single, stole second and scored on Aucker's clutch two-out hit.
There were not enough clutch hits, though.
Middle Tennessee batters were 1-for-16 with runner aboard and they were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Clutch hits were also far and few between as the Blue Raiders were 3-for-11 with two outs.
"We had every opportunity to win this game, but we just couldn't get a big hit," McGuire said. "We out-hit them eight-to-five but we couldn't get the big hit with runners in scoring position. That's when it becomes frustrating."
Louisiana Tech scored both of its runs in the bottom of the third. Of the four hits Spencer allowed, three were bunched in the decisive third inning.
Middle Tennessee will try to salvage the final game of the series Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m.
