MT falls to Panthers 9-1 and 7-1
MIAMI – Middle Tennessee (23-20, 6-17) dropped both games of Saturday's double header to FIU (28-26, 11-12), falling 9-1 in six innings in game one before dropping game two 7-1.
FIU got things going early in game one as Stephanie Texeira singled down the right field line to bring home Jackie Schoff for the game's first run.
The score remained 1-0 until the third when Kristin Uselton tripled to lead off the inning for MT. Uselton then scored when Lauren Payne reached on an error and the Raiders had tied the game 1-1 after the top of the third.
FIU came right back, however, as Texeira singled home Ashley Leon and Schoff to give FIU the lead back. Gabby Spallone followed with a base hit up the middle and Texeira scored and the Panthers led 4-1 after three innings.
Both pitchers settled down from there as no one scored again until the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, the FIU bats came alive again as they scored five runs to end the game as they picked up a run rule 9-1 win over the Raiders.
Kelci Cheney (14-15) earned the loss as she allowed nine runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings. Corinne Jenkins (7-9) picked up the win as she went 6.0 innings and held the Raiders to one run on six hits.
Game two began quickly again for the Panthers as they plated two in the first. Schoff scored on a Spallone single and Aleima Lopez followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Texeira for the early 2-0 lead.
In the third A.J. Belans singled up the middle to score Lopez with two out and the Panthers had upped their lead to 3-0.
The following inning Spallone singled to bring home Dominique Grossman, then Schoff and Texeira crossed the plate because of a throwing error as the Raiders were getting the ball back to the infield. Two batters later Belans reached on another MT error to allow Spallone to score and FIU had a 7-0 lead after four innings.
With two on and no one out in the seventh Uselton earned an infield single that brought Austyn Whaley home and the Raiders had cut the FIU lead to 7-1.
Megan Chocallo (4-9) started the game for the Raiders and took the loss as she allowed seven runs on 13 hits in 3.1 innings. Pattie Taylor did well in relief as she threw 2.2 innings of scoreless one hit ball as she did not allow a walk. Abby Summers (12-8) took the win as she allowed just one run on four hits in 6.0 plus innings.
The Raiders will finish the season Sunday as they take on FIU one more time. Game time has changed and first pitch will now be at 11 a.m. central time.
