Raiders mange 4 hits in 5-0 loss
RUSTON, La. – Middle Tennessee's bats were stifled in Ruston once again as LA Tech took game three of the series by a score of 5-0.
The Blue Raiders (17-31, 4-20) hurt themselves by allowing three runs attributed to an error and a pair of wild pitches, but a sputtering offense failed to give Middle an opportunity to keep up with the Bulldogs (31-14, 15-9) in the series finale.
Starting pitcher Tyler Troutt kept Middle Tennessee in the game during the opening frames as the Raiders and Bulldogs battled in a scoreless tie through the first three innings.
The Blue Raiders had an opportunity to give Troutt a lead in the third when Kevin Sullivan doubled and later moved to third on a fielder's choice, but a strike out ended the threat.
LA Tech finally opened the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded plated a run.
Cody Puckett came on to replace Troutt following the run and stranded the remaining baserunners to hold LA Tech to a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders again put runners on base in the fifth and sixth but were unable to draw even with the Bulldogs in both frames.
A leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth put the Bulldogs in position to increase their lead, which they did following a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to go up 2-0 in Ruston.
LA Tech made the score 3-0 in the seventh inning when a pair of wild pitches moved a Bulldog runner from second around to score, the second Bulldog run to score on a wild pitch with two outs in consecutive innings.
Nate Hoffmann would come on to pitch the eighth in place of Puckett, who gave up only one hit in three and one-third innings but allowed the pair of runs on wild pitches.
LA Tech solidified their lead in the eighth inning with a pair of runs, one of which was unearned following a fielding error.
Hoffmann ended the inning on his next pitch, but down to their final three outs the Blue Raiders came up empty in the final frame.
Middle Tennessee hits the road again on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. meeting with Austin Peay in Clarksville.
