Southwest Baptist transfer to play for Ramsay
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee head coach Charlie Ramsay has announced the signing of Maria Josefina Zehnder, a junior transfer from Southwest Baptist.
"Josie will be new to our team, but she certainly has a lot of experience," Ramsay said of the newest Blue Raider. "She made it to the semifinals of the Division II Nationals in the fall and has big match experience. She'll be a veteran on the court for us."
The Rafaela, Argentina, native spent her first two years of college tennis as a Bearcat under the direction of John Bryant. She was ranked as high as No. 8 by the ITA in Division II Doubles and is currently ranked No. 39 in Division II Singles. Southwest Baptist currently sits at No. 18 in the Division II Team rankings behind Zehnder's stellar play.
At SBU, Zehnder took home Freshman of the Year honors for her region in 2015. After a 26-4 mark so far in her sophomore campaign, Zehnder was rewarded with First Team Singles and First Team Doubles in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
In Argentina, Zehnder reached a national ranking of No. 3 at the Under-16 level, including a No. 15 ranking in South America. In 2013, she received two WTA points in singles and was ranked No. 1185 in the WTA.
"Josie grew up playing on red clay, so she's used to long points," Ramsay added. "She's an all-court player and enjoys wearing her opponent down from the baseline."
Ramsay's squad will look to improve in 2017 after reaching the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship, and Zehnder is expected to make an impact.
