MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Just as preseason skill development is getting underway, the Blue Raiders have suffered a slight setback as rising senior Reggie Upshaw will undergo surgery Thursday to repair a damaged ligament in his left wrist.
Upshaw experienced slight pains in postseason play, but made great progress since the season ended until the pain returned over the last couple of weeks. After an MRI on Friday revealed a torn ligament in his wrist, Upshaw and head coach Kermit Davis scheduled the surgery for Thursday morning.
Upshaw should be ready to return to running and conditioning six weeks after his surgery and could be cleared for non-contact basketball skill development and activities in approximately 90 days.
"Reggie has exemplified great toughness throughout his career at Middle Tennessee," Davis said. "We expect him to be very diligent in his rehabilitation and make a full, strong recovery."
While Upshaw should be available in time for the regular season, the Conference USA Tournament MVP will certainly miss valuable preseason practice time.
The Chattanooga, Tenn., native is expected to be in the hunt for C-USA Player of the Year honors in his senior campaign after erupting onto the national scene with his 21-point performance in MT's 90-81 NCAA Tournament upset against No. 2 Michigan State.
