Junior among 11 players up for honor
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee shortstop Riley Delgado has been named one of 11 semifinalists for the Brooks Wallace Award – which recognizes the country's best shortstop.
Delgado joins Florida Atlantic's CJ Chatham, the C-USA Player of the Year, on the prestigious list which includes four players from the Atlantic Coast Conference and two players each from C-USA, SEC, Big 12, and one from the Big Ten.
Deglado, who was named All-Conference USA last week, is second among the national semifinalists for batting average (.388), on-base percentage (.492) and third for total hits with 80.
"To see your name listed along with some of the top players in the nation is a real honor," Delgado said. "I have to thank my teammates, coaches, support staff and everyone who makes it possible to be recognized for the success I have had doing something I love doing."
Delgado hit leadoff and started every game at shortstop after transferring from Columbia State, where he was a first-team All-American and National Defensive Player of the Year. He led the team in batting average, on-base percentage, hits and multi-hit games with 26. He had a season-long 14-game hit streak during one stretch, and he reached base safely in 23 consecutive contests during another.
"It is an honor to be recognized as one of the best in collegiate baseball because there are so many great players out there," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "It says a lot to be on such a prestigious list of outstanding shortstops nationally, and Riley is certainly deserving of this recognition."
The award, sponsored by Mizuno, will be presented July 2 in Lubbock, Texas.
