Hasper to compete for spot in weekend rotation
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee has added another strong-armed righty to the pitching arsenal with the signing of Heartland Community College standout Tyler Hasper, according to Blue Raider Head Coach Jim McGuire.
Hasper (6-foot, 195 pounds) just completed his two-year career at Heartland with a sterling 15-4 career mark. He will have two years of eligibility remaining at Middle Tennessee. Hasper will compete for one of the spots in the Blue Raiders' weekend rotation in 2017.
"Tyler certainly will have an opportunity to be one of our starting pitchers, and hopefully he will compete to be a weekend starter for us," McGuire said. "He is a four-pitch guy and brings a lot of experience to the table for us. He has pitched in a lot of big games. He is a very good competitor and he battles on the mound. He battles through things and that will allow him a chance to get deep into games."
Hasper was named the Region 24 Junior College Pitcher of the Year while at Heartland Community College. The power right-hander who features a fastball, slider, curve and change, was one of the nation's top junior college pitchers in 2016.
Hasper was 10-1 with a 1.41 earned run average and 92 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched, to go along with five complete games. He ranked second nationally in the junior college ranks for ERA, was sixth in wins, 11th in complete games and 14th in strikeouts.
That followed up a strong 2015 campaign when he posted a 5-3 mark with a 2.63 ERA and 73 strikeouts.
After losing four senior pitchers from last year's staff, including two from the weekend rotation, McGuire said signing quality pitchers was imperative.
"We knew the focus would have to be on the pitching side in terms of recruiting as we moved forward from the spring," McGuire said. "This is another piece to the puzzle to bolster the staff going into next season."
Hasper was one of the top prep prospects in Illinois before attending Heartland Community College in Normal, Ill. He was rated the No. 9 right-handed pitching prospect, and the 19th best prospect overall, in Illinois by Perfect Game as a senior at Waubonsie Valley High School in 2014.
According to Prep Baseball Report, Hasper fashioned one of the strongest arms in the Class of 2014 in Illinois.
