Ampomah finishes third at NCAA Championships

Rutto, Laari advance to 800 finals
EUGENE, Oregon – In his final event for the Blue Raiders, John Ampomah placed third in the javelin, while two Middle Tennessee runners advanced to the 800 meter final at Hayward Field Wednesday.
Ampomah, who entered the meet without losing in the javelin in 2016, netted his best throw of the NCAA Championships in his first attempt, tossing the javelin 76.44 meters (250-9).
The Ghana native held the top rank until the fifth round when Mississippi State's Curtis Thompson launched a 77.64 meter throw (254-9), which would win him the event.
Texas A&M's Ioannis Kyriazis jumped to second on his final attempt of the day, throwing 77.25 meters (253-5).
In the men's 800 meter, Eliud Rutto and Sampson Laari were placed into the second-of-three heats, and both advanced to the finals.
Rutto contended with the lead group in the second heat and in the final 200 meters placed second in 1:46.15, gaining one-of-two automatic qualifying positions in the heat. Laari followed the same strategy as Rutto and was in the fourth position through the first 600 meters before finishing third in 1:46.44 and qualifying on his time.
Atsu Nyamadi completed the first five events of the decathlon, earning his highest finish in the long jump. Nyamadi earned 862 points after leaping 7.20 meters (23-7.5).
The Ghana native earned an additional 819 points in the 400 meter, which was the final event of the day, finishing in 49.91 for 12th.
Nyamadi added 758 points in the high jump, clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75) for ninth, while in the shot put, the senior launched a 13.28 meter throw (43-7) for 684 points.
Nyamadi opened the day in the 100 meter with his lowest finish but his second-best point total, finishing 16th in 11.12 for 834 points.
