MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee will ring in the New Year by opening defense of its C-USA championship with a New Year's Day game at UAB.
The Blue Raiders released the conference portion of their schedule Saturday. The non-conference portion of the schedule will be released at a later date.
"Conference USA is a very difficult conference," said Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell, the program's all-time winningest coach with 276 wins. "Whether you are home or on the road you know the competition is going to be tough and the games are going to be competitive."
Insell said he expects the league to be even more challenging in 2016-17.
"I really thought there were several competitive teams in our league last season," Insell said. "Some programs with first-year coaches really made some tremendous strides and that made the league better overall. I am looking forward to another competitive conference this season."
Middle Tennessee returns four starters and eight letterwinners from its 2015-16 team, including 2016 Tournament MVP Ty Petty and Freshman of the Year Alex Johnson. The Blue Raiders fashioned a 24-9 record, won C-USA and advanced into the NCAA Tournament in 2015-16.
After opening the season at UAB Jan. 1, Middle Tennessee will face Rice and North Texas, respectively, in its first home weekend.
A tough early-conference road trip looms when the Blue Raiders travel to Marshall (Jan. 12) and finish the road trip at WKU (Jan. 14). Middle Tennessee returns home to play FIU (Jan. 19) and Florida Atlantic (Jan. 21).
Middle Tennessee returns to southern Mississippi and Louisiana for the first time in two seasons when it plays at Southern Miss (Jan. 26) and at Louisiana Tech (Jan. 28).
The Blue Raiders will play five of their nine conference games in February at the friendly confines of Murphy Center, where they own a 91-6 mark against conference foes. The month starts with home games against UTSA (Feb. 2) and UTEP (Feb. 4).
After a tough road swing to Old Dominion (Feb. 9) and at Charlotte (Feb. 11), Middle Tennessee will have its longest league homestand of the season, beginning with a date against rival WKU.
Middle Tennessee will face the Toppers, Feb. 16, before facing Marshall (Feb. 18). One week later they will face UAB (Feb. 25) for Senior Night before closing the season on the road at FIU (March 2) and Florida Atlantic (March 4).
