Former Blue Raider moves on to next event in November
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Brittany Huxley's tennis career is continuing in the Midstate, as she won the Nashville Shores Women's $25K Pre Qualifier recently, earning a wild card spot into the Qualifying tournament in November.
"I hit with [MT assistant coach] David Henry quite a bit and kept up the fitness by doing some running, which is a big part of tennis," Huxley said about her training regimen. "It's been relaxed, but I'm still keeping up with everything."
Huxley was dominant early in the tournament, as she didn't give up a game through the first three sets. Her first victory in the event came in the quarterfinals against Adrienne Clayton, 6-0, 6-0, followed by a straight set win over Tennessee signee Ariadna Riley in the semifinals, 6-0, 7-6.
A victory over No. 2 seed Sophie Abrams by former Memphis Tiger Ashley Murdock set up a finals match between Murdock and top-seeded Huxley. Huxley came away with the win by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to earn a spot in the "wild card" tournament on Nov. 19-21.
"I was surprised to be the top seed considering I had no points or rankings. Those last two rounds were hard and they were good girls, so I was really happy to get through that," Huxley added. "Now I have a bit of a break to really concentrate and get better for qualifying."
Vanderbilt hosted the Pre Qualifier event and will again host the next tournament in November. Depending on her performance, Huxley could move on to the Nashville Shores Women's $25K Pro Tennis Classic on Nov. 21-26.
