MT turns attention to No. 1 FSU
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a tightly contested match for the first 70 minutes in Nashville, the Blue Raiders pulled away late for a commanding, 6-2, win against Jackson State Thursday night.
The six scores for Middle Tennessee marked the most they have collected in a match since an 8-0 win against Alabama A&M during the 2013 season.
"It was good to be able to finally see some of the things that we're working on come to fruition and it's always nice when you have several different players score goals," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said.
Despite a close score for most of the evening, Middle controlled possession for much of the contest and tallied an eye-popping 33 shots with 15 on goal while holding Jackson State to just nine shots with five on frame.
The Blue Raider goalkeepers weren't called to action much on the night as Sydney Chalcraft registered a pair of saves and Maddy Kim added another in her MT debut.
Freshman Sam DeBien opened the scoring in the 16th minute of action, netting her first career goal when sophomore transfer Charlotte Van Ishoven found her in the box.
Middle Tennessee continued to control possession for most of the first period as they led Jackson State in shots, 18-3, and in shots on goal, 7-1.
The action got started quickly in the second half with a flurry of early goals. Kerri Cook was the first to strike with a header into the back of the net off of a beautiful set piece ball into the box by Amber Hoot in the 51st minute.
Within a minute of MT's second goal, Jackson State was able to get a goal back but it was just over six minutes later that the Raiders played a ball into the box and got an own goal off of a Tiger defender to push the score to 3-1.
Jackson State was able to answer one more time on the evening when a 69th minute goal brought the Tigers back within one, but it was all Blue for the last 20 minutes of the contest.
"[Closing out games] is definitely something that we've got to make sure we do a better job of," Rhoden stated. "When you work hard to get a goal you can't just give one up as easily as we did."
Salera Jordan netted her first career goal in the 72nd minute of play before a pair of late goals by sophomore Abbie Brown sealed the match for Middle Tennessee.
MT returns to action Sunday afternoon as they host the No. 1 team in the country, Florida State.
The contest between the Blue Raiders and Seminoles will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
