MURFREESBORO - Middle Tennessee Greek students have a new way to show their school spirit and win some cool Blue Raider prizes.
During the 2016-2017 academic year, the MT Athletic and Academic Marketing Departments are teaming up with Fraternity and Sorority Life to host the 2016-2017 FSL Spirit Competition.
"The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is excited to partner with the Athletics Department and the Division of Marketing and Communications on the Fraternity and Sorority Life Spirit Competition," said Leslie Merritt, MT's director of fraternity and sorority life. "This is a new partnership that we hope will not only increase attendance at athletics events but our members' pride in their university and athletic teams."
There are two categories for this year's competition. The first is the competition for the President's Spirit Cup, in which Middle Tennessee President Sidney McPhee will judge which chapter shows the most spirit across all Blue Raider sports.
The chapter that wins the President's Spirit Cup will be honorary guests of the MT Athletics Department at the sixth annual Raiders' Choice Awards, which recognizes the athletic and academic achievements of Middle Tennessee's athletes in the 2016-2017 academic year. The winning chapter will be presented the President's Spirit Cup at the event.
The second category for this year's FSL Spirit Competition is the fight for spirit items. The MTSU Division of Marketing and Communications will invest $10,000 in Blue Raider-themed items that will be awarded to chapters that participate and earn enough points. $5,000 will go towards football prizes, while the remaining $5,000 will be split between men's and women's basketball.
Chapters will be split into groups based on their size, with Group 1 consisting of those with 1-25 members, Group 2 for 26-60 members and Group 3 for those with 61 or more members. Participating chapters then earn points based on attendance for football and men's and women's basketball games, and the chapters with the top attendance in each group will earn 100 points.
At the end of each sports' season, the points will be added up for each chapter and prizes ranging from T-shirts to a signed football by head coach Rick Stockstill and the rest of the football team will be given based on how many points they garner. A plaque will also be awarded for the total points winner of each group.
The main goal of the FSL Spirit Competition is to bolster student involvement at Middle Tennessee athletics events and to promote school spirit.
"Our partnership with Fraternity and Sorority Life is just a stepping stone to the 2016-2017 year in creating excitement, getting students more involved at athletic events and promoting school spirit," MT Assistant Athletic Director of Marketing Danielle Mayeaux said. "It is important for us to continue to improve the ways that we connect with our students and learn what drives them to be more involved with MTSU."
At Blue Raider home football games, fraternity and sorority chapter members must enter at Gate 4 and scan their student IDs to be counted towards the competition. There will then be a dedicated section in Floyd Stadium that will be reserved for Greek members opening 90 minutes prior to kickoff. The area will be opened to all MT students 20 minutes prior to kickoff.
