Post players combine for 43 points
SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA – It did not take long for Middle Tennessee to establish its presence in the second game of its Costa Rica foreign tour.
The Blue Raiders improved to 2-0 on the trip with a 101-25 thumping of Coronado, the No. 2 national team in Costa Rica, Thursday. Middle Tennessee will play its third and final game of the tour Saturday morning at 11 (Central).
Middle Tennessee's inside attack was too much for Coronado as the four post players combined for 43 points and 22 rebounds, led by Alex Johnson's 16 points and four rebounds. Johnson hit her first four shots as the Blue Raiders opened a 24-9 first-quarter cushion.
Rebecca Reuter also had a strong game inside with 14 points and six rebounds, Gabby Lyon provided seven points and three boards, and freshman Charity Savage continued her strong play with six points, nine rebounds and two blocks.
"All of the young ladies played well but our inside attack was really strong," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Rick Insell said. "We attacked the paint from the get-go, and Alex Johnson hit her first four shots and that got us going. I was proud of Rebecca Reuter's play. She was more aggressive in there, and Gabby just keeps on doing what Gabby does. I have been impressed with the play of our freshman forward Charity Savage, too."
While the forwards feasted, Middle Tennessee's guards also got into the action. Jess Louro led the guards with 15 points on the strength of two 3-pointers. She also had five rebounds. Ty Petty had another strong game with 12 points, three assists and three steals, and Jordan Majors netted 10 points.
Freshman Kyla Allison was stellar with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting and three rebounds, and Abbey Sissom had a good all-around game with six points, four assists and three steals. Katie Collier added five points and Mychelle Johnson scored two as every Blue Raider who played scored.
