MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Blue Raider soccer is back in full force as 25 student-athletes checked in on Wednesday for fall camp.
Middle Tennessee's first full training session will take place on Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. after the 2016 squad spent the first two days of fall undergoing physicals, attending orientation meetings and taking part in conditioning tests while getting their feet wet in training.
A total of 13 returners reported on Wednesday but were joined by 12 eager newcomers looking to make an early impact as Blue Raiders.
The senior quartet of Courteney Gibson, Angie Lai, Madison Ledet and Grace Stewart as well as junior midfielder and Preseason All-Conference USA selection Cameron Cox highlight the list of returners while sophomore Celeste Barnard will battle to take over the goalkeeping duties for MT.
"I'm certainly hoping we'll get the benefit of experience from the returners." Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "They're a group that went through a lot last year in terms of injuries but was able to get together, persevere and finish off the season pretty strong."
Gibson's team-leading four assists from a year ago are a bright spot up top as the Blue Raiders must replace their top four goal scorers from a season ago.
The defense, however, returns four players with significant experience from a unit that allowed only 16 goals in 20 matches last season.
With only a couple of days of fall behind them, Rhoden is still waiting to see how far along his team is in preparation for the upcoming season.
"It's still too early to tell. I think for us it's more about getting them out there and taking the first three days to see where everybody is physically and mentally."
The Blue Raider Soccer team will be in attendance at Fan Day on Aug. 14 prior to a home exhibition match against Martin Methodist. The regular season opens up against Jacksonville State on Aug. 19 at Dean A. Hayes Track and Soccer Stadium.
