Raiders fall in non-conference match at Tennessee
9/11/2016 3:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of late goals sealed the 3-0 contest for Tennessee on Sunday, handing Middle Tennessee a loss in its final non-conference match of 2016.
Despite having 24 shots to MT's 12, the Volunteers only placed two more shots on target than the Blue Raiders were able to supply. Middle, however, was unable to get anything past UT's keeper in the shutout effort.
Salera Jordan was assertive offensively as Blue Raider fans have become accustomed to, taking five shots on the day and placing three on target.
Freshman keeper Sydney Chalcraft managed five saves on the day in the Blue Raider net, giving her 35 this season through seven matches.
Tennessee opened the game strong with six shots in the opening minutes, but nothing challenged Chalcraft as she held them scoreless through the early flurry of attempts.
After leveling off for several minutes, the game opened back up as Tennessee had another shot on goal in the 20th minute followed closely by an MT shot on frame by Salera Jordan in the 23rd minute.
With nearly 35 full minutes off the clock, Tennessee opened the scoring with a breakaway goal into the bottom right corner of the net.
MT would log another shot on goal in the first half off the foot of Savannah Stair but went into the locker room trailing the Volunteers, 1-0.
Jordan opened the second half up with the first shot on goal after the break when she fired one on target in the 48th minute.
Freshman Haley Nishimoto and Jordan each forced the Tennessee keeper back into action in the 57th and 60th minutes, respectively, but MT was still unable to level the score at one each.
As the game was nearing its end, Tennessee bagged a second goal off the foot of Hannah Wilkinson to push their lead to 2-0 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Blue Raiders were able to muster a couple more shots in the ensuing minutes with Abbie Brown placing one on target, but in the 88th minute Tennessee put the match away when Cali Hutson put the Volunteers' third goal into the net.
Middle Tennessee opens Conference USA play on Sunday, Sep. 18, when they host UAB in a 5:00 p.m. contest.
