Three Blue Raiders See Time in the MLB 2016 Season
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Former Middle Tennessee standouts, Bryce Brentz, Zac Curtis, and Michael McKenry all saw action in the 2016 MLB season. Five more Blue Raiders were active in the minors as well.
Bryce Brentz | OF | Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox | Boston Red Sox
Brentz played 25 games this year in the popular and competitive Boston Red Sox outfield, amassing a .279 batting average, including his first career MLB home run against the Texas Rangers Jun. 26. His stint in the majors this season was Brentz' longest in his career, dating back to 2014 when he made his MLB debut and nine appearances in a Boston uniform. The Knoxville, Tenn. native, spent the majority of his 2016 season with the Triple-A affiliate Pawtucket Red Sox, where he played in 54 games. The right-hander produced four homers, 21 RBI, and a .250 batting average with Pawtucket. Brentz also spent a short period of time with the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, seeing 12 games of action before getting promoted to Pawtucket.
Zac Curtis | LHP | Double-A Mobile BayBears | Arizona Diamondbacks
Curtis made his MLB debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Apr. 30 against the Colorado Rockies, throwing a perfect two-thirds of an inning. The southpaw did not allow a run in his first 10 appearances as a big leaguer and allowed no runs in nine appearances in the month of May. He ended the season appearing in 21 games for the D-Backs before finishing up his season with the Double-A affiliate Mobile BayBears. During his time with the BayBears, the powerful lefty threw 19-2/3 innings of work, with a 3.20 ERA in 19 appearances. Curtis started the season with the High-A Affiliate Visalia Rawhide for eight games.
Michael McKenry | C | Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox | Milwaukee Brewers
McKenry moved all around the country this season, seeing time with the St. Louis Cardinals for three games, in addition to playing for the Round Rock Express (Triple-A, Texas Rangers), Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A, St. Louis Cardinals), Gwinnett Braves (Triple-A, Atlanta Braves) and the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Triple-A, Milwaukee Brewers). The 31-year old catcher, played most of his games with the Redbirds, seeing action in 24 contests. During his time in Memphis, he put up an impressive .350 batting average to go along with five homers and 20 RBI.
Hunter Adkins | RHP | Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs | Miami Marlins
Adkins spent most of his year with the Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins, the Jacksonville Suns, making 11 starts and 22 total appearances on the season. Adkins ended his season getting promoted to the Zephyrs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Marlins. He made five appearances with New Orleans while compiling a 2-1 record. The right-hander also spent a brief time with the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads, as he played in five games with the team.
Ronnie Jebavy | OF | High-A San Jose Giants | San Francisco Giants
Jebavy had a great season for the San Jose Giants, hitting 12 HR and 47 RBI in 127 games for the High-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. Jebavy was a defensive stud for San Jose this year making outstanding catches in center field over the course of the season. However, his season ended abruptly in the first game of the playoffs, when Jebavy went diving for a ball in center field and crashed into a teammate causing him to dislocate his shoulder.
Johnathan Frebis | LHP | Single-A Kannapolis Intimidators | Chicago White Sox
Frebis threw 124 innings with the Chicago White Sox affiliate Kannapolis Intimidators. The southpaw ended his season with a 4.79 ERA, while striking out 71. The Murfreesboro native played in 29 games this year, including 25 starts, while posting an 8-10 record.
Heath Slatton | RHP | Single-A Augusta Green Jackets | San Francisco Giants
The Columbia, Tenn. native served primarily as a relief pitcher for the Green Jackets, an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. He made 27 appearances for Augusta, including five starts, while amassing a solid 2.37 ERA. The righty also fanned 44 batters in 49 1/3 innnings of work on the year.
Nathan Foriest | RHP | Low-A Tri-City Dust Devils
Spent time with two teams this year the Dust Devils and the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Low-A, San Diego Padres). Foriest played 13 games with Tri-City and 12 with Fort Wayne for the 2016 season. He ended the season with the Dust Devils amounting an impressive 2.87 ERA, while striking out 21 batters in 15 2/3 innings of work.
