MT to close VCU Invitational against Liberty
RICHMOND, Va. — Seeking to capitalize on their win against Morgan State Friday morning, the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders (3-9) came up short Friday night against host VCU in three sets.
Regan Coughlin recorded her third double-double of the season as she totaled 10 kills and a team-best 15 digs. Bailey Mason and Delaney Gallagher also provided eight kills each.
The Rams took a 4-0 lead in the opening set and kept the Raiders out of rhythm early. Trailing 10-3, the Blue Raiders rallied to trim the lead to 16-14. MT managed to keep within range, but a late 4-1 VCU run gave the Rams a 25-20 win.
Looking to even the score, MT took a 4-2 lead in the second before the Rams tied the set. Both teams traded points until the Rams took an 11-8 lead that grew to 20-11. The Raiders attempted a rally with a 5-1 run, but VCU silenced the MT momentum and took the second set 25-19.
Middle Tennessee's heart and fight were on full display in the final frame. Despite trailing 16-8, the Blue Raiders climbed back into the match behind a 5-0 run. The Raiders answered every VCU point until MT tied the match at 21-21. With the match on the line, the Blue Raiders forced ties over the next 10 points to keep the set balanced at 26-26. The hard fight fell just short, however, as VCU forced a pair of errors to win the set 28-26 and claimed the match 3-0.
The Rams (6-6) were led by Vicky Giommarini who logged 11 kills and 11 digs.
The Blue Raiders return to the court against Liberty Saturday morning at 9 a.m. CT for the final match before conference play begins next weekend.
