MT faces host VCU in night cap
RICHMOND, Va. — In the opening match of the VCU Invitational, Middle Tennessee used an impressive balanced attack from both sides of the court to knock off Morgan State 3-1.
Dora Peonia provided the offensive spark for the Raiders as she set a career-high 15 kills and hit .542 for the match. Aubrie Huddleston added 12 kills, and Regan Coughlin tallied eight kills with 18 digs.
Jacqueline Lux recorded her second double-double of the season with a career-best 45 assists to go along with 11 digs, and added a career-high two aces from the service line.
Meg Irvin turned in a career day with career highs in digs (26), assists (4) and service aces (4).
Defensively, MT tallied five total blocks, including three from Delaney Gallagher. The Blue Raiders also set a season-high 81 digs in the match.
"We started out passing well. That was big for us," assistant coach Jeff Huebner said. "The first two sets we did a good job attacking. I think we had one of our highest efficiencies in that second set. Our kids did a great job of finishing well."
The Raiders and Bears traded points throughout the first set with neither team holding more than a three-point advantage. Trailing 21-20, Middle Tennessee took control of the match behind a kill from Peonia and forced a pair of errors. A key block from Gallagher put MT in position for set point, and Huddleston landed a kill to give the Raiders a 25-21 set win.
The Blue Raiders kept the momentum going in the second set and claimed a 14-11 advantage. MT continued to dominate with a 9-0 run highlighted by back-to-back blocks by Gallagher to extend the lead to 23-11. The Bears attempted a rally, but a kill from Huddleston along with a set-clinching kill by Sabrie Sirmones gave MT the 25-13 set win. The Raiders committed only two attack errors in the second frame and hit .346 for the set.
Much like the first set, both teams traded points until Morgan State answered late. With the score knotted at 18-18, the Bears used a 5-2 run to jump ahead 23-20. The Raiders rallied to trim the lead to 24-23, but a Morgan State kill got the Bears on the board in the match.
The Bears held on to the third-set momentum to open the fourth and established a 6-2 lead. MT rallied and took eight of the next 12 points to tie the match at 10-10. The final frame then became a back-and-forth rally that saw 10 more ties for the remainder of the set. MT held match point at 24-22 before a kill and a block by the Bears tied the set 24-24. The Raiders responded behind a kill from Peonia and forced an attack error to take the set 26-24 and claim the match 3-1.
The Raiders will turn their focus to the second match of the day against host VCU at 6 p.m. CT. Middle Tennessee holds a 3-2 series lead against the Rams.
