Raiders prep for conference play
RICHMOND, Va. — In the non-conference finale of the season, Middle Tennessee dropped a three-set match to Liberty to close the VCU Invitational.
Bailey Mason, Dora Peonia, Aubrie Huddleston and Regan Coughlin all tallied seven kills, while Vonnie Covington and Delaney Gallagher pitched in five and four kills, respectively.
After a hard-fought match against VCU Friday night, Middle Tennessee maintained the same intensity against the Flames. The Raiders put themselves in position in each set and found offensive sparks to silence Liberty runs.
"The most encouraging thing to see was how we battled. Matches previously have been one good set and two average or below-average sets," assistant coach Jeff Huebner said. "For us to finish the match against VCU 28-26 and against Liberty 25-23 twice, that type of fight matters."
The Blue Raiders began the opening set aggressively to build an early 10-6 lead. The MT advantage increased to 14-10 before Liberty responded. The Flames used a 5-1 run to tie the match, and continued the tight play by forcing ties on the next 10 points. Knotted at 20-20, MT put themselves in position for a win at 22-20, but the Flames responded to tie the match for the ninth time in the set. Consecutive kills from Sydney Morris and Sirena Vorster gave Liberty the opening-set win and put momentum on their side.
The Flames used that momentum in the second set to jump in front and never relinquished the lead, answering every Blue Raider rally. MT used a late 3-0 run to keep within range, but Liberty forced 10 Blue Raider errors throughout the set to surge to a 25-18 win.
The final set of the match opened with a stalemate as both teams traded 16 of the first 18 points. Liberty took control with a 16-12 lead before the Blue Raiders gave one final push. Trailing by four, Middle Tennessee rallied to tie the match at 17-17 and kept the pace over the ensuing eight points. With the set tied 21-21, Liberty claimed the next three points to hold match point. The Blue Raiders forced an error and served up an ace to get within one, but an error on the final point gave the Flames a 25-23 set win to claim the match 3-0.
Middle Tennessee will open conference play next weekend on the road at UAB Friday before traveling to Marshall on Sunday.
"We're so close. We're right there as a program, and as a group we have kids who are ready to come in and make a difference," Huebner said. "I think we are starting to understand how to be dedicated and committed to our principles. That's great to see."
