Women’s Tennis faces strong competition in first fall event
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The fall season opened for Middle Tennessee women's tennis in Columbia, South Carolina, as the Blue Raiders faced Winthrop, South Carolina and North Florida in the South Carolina Fall Invitational.
Action started on Friday, with the Blue Raiders taking four out of seven singles matches from Winthrop. Alory Pereira earned the victory at No. 2 in the third set match-tiebreak, followed by Maria Josefina Zehnder at No. 3, who won by a score of 6-4, 7-6.
Costanza Magazzini represented the Blue Raiders at No. 4, where she earned a 6-3, 7-5 win. Holly Horsfall got the upper hand at No. 7 by a score of 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
In doubles play, Sarah Sediri and Zehnder won at No. 2 over the Eagles, 6-1. Magazzini paired with Luisa Zirilli to earna 6-2 victory at No. 3. Sediri and Zehnder also won over South Carolina's No. 2 doubles pair by a score of 6-3.
On Saturday, the Blue Raiders matched up in singles against the Gamecocks, who finished last season ranked No. 17 by the ITA. Magazzini and Herrero both earned singles victories against the host team. Herrero again found success in doubles against the Gamecocks with Zirilli as her partner at No. 3, 6-4.
MT took one of three doubles matches from North Florida on the second day of competition, with Zirilli and Horsfall winning at No. 3 by a score of 7-5.
The Blue Raiders concluded the weekend with six singles matches against North Florida. Zehnder took her second set at No. 2 by a score of 6-2, but the Ospreys came away with the third set in that match to complete a sweep.
Next for the Blue Raiders is the USTA Pro Circuit 10K in Charleston, South Carolina, scheduled for Sept. 23-Oct. 2.
