First player of week awards for both
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee's I'Tavius Mathers and Shaquille Huff were both named Conference USA Players of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday. Mathers was the Offensive winner and Huff brought home the Defensive award. It's the first honor for both players.
Mathers played a major role in a dominating performance during Middle Tennessee's 41-21 win at Bowling Green Saturday. The senior scored four total touchdowns (three rushing, one receiving) and became just the second MT football player ever to amass 100-plus yards rushing and receiving in the same game. He also became the first player in NCAA Division I football to accomplish it this season.
The Murfreesboro native rushed for 157 yards on 27 carries and three touchdowns, including a career-best 53-yarder. He also had 103 yards receiving on four receptions. He took a screen pass and turned it into a 78-yard touchdown reception to start the second half and provide MT a two-touchdown lead. He also provided the go-ahead score just before halftime and his 260 all-purpose yards was the ninth most in a game at Middle Tennessee.
Huff was a major impact along the defensive front in Middle Tennessee's win against the Falcons. Huff had eight tackles, two for loss, one sack and a forced fumble to help lead a Blue Raider defense that pitched shutout football in the second half and allowed just seven points after the first quarter. Huff's forced fumble late in the second half set up Middle Tennessee's go-ahead touchdown that pushed the score to 28-21.
This marks the 11th and 12 Conference USA Player of the Week winners under Rick Stockstill and the 60th and 61st all-time under the 11th year head coach.
